Elon Musk's Terafab accelerates orders – who stands to benefit?

Terafab largely completed during Q2 the ordering of front-end semiconductor manufacturing equipment from key global suppliers, including ASML, Applied Materials, Lam Research, and Tokyo Electron.

And this is no longer just a paper project by Musk...

This involves a transition from the planning and negotiation stage to a stage where real money begins to flow to equipment suppliers.

So – what exactly is Elon Musk's Terafab?

Here's everything you need to know:

Terafab is an ambitious project by Elon Musk, Tesla, and SpaceX, designed to establish an independent chip manufacturing system,

The idea is not to settle for chip manufacturing alone – but to integrate chip design, manufacturing, memory, advanced packaging, and testing under one system.

The goal is to meet the future computing needs of Tesla, Optimus robots, Musk's companies' AI systems, and also space computing infrastructure.

SpaceX has defined Terafab as a project intended to become the world's largest chip factory – with a long-term goal of reaching a production capacity of over one terawatt of computing power per year...

In other words – Musk is not building just another chip factory; he is trying to build a factory capable of feeding a significant part of his future computing machine.

And the scale? It's already getting out of hand.

In August, it was revealed that the initial phase of the factory in Texas is expected to require an investment of approximately $16.8 billion.

The full complex is planned to span over 100 million square feet, approximately 9.3 million square meters of production space.

You need to understand, this is no longer a 'chip factory' in the traditional sense of the definition – it's more of a massive industrial campus built around the entire computing value chain.

And the important point is that the investment is not only for manufacturing chips for Tesla,

The aspiration is to build production capacity that can serve the enormous growth in global demand for artificial intelligence computing.

According to SpaceX, the future limitation of artificial intelligence will not only be software quality,

It will be physical – how many chips can be produced, how much computing infrastructure can be established, and how much electricity can be supplied to them.

This is where the chip equipment giants come in,

To build such a factory, hundreds of types of production systems are needed.

ASML provides lithography systems – including EUV systems required for advanced chip manufacturing.

Applied Materials $AMAT, Lam Research $LRCX, and Tokyo Electron provide critical equipment for various stages of the process, including etching, deposition, cleaning, and processing.

Already in April, it was reported that the Terafab team approached major equipment suppliers, received price quotes and delivery times for various types of equipment,

And now, the more interesting stage arrives:

Actual orders

And this is a fundamental difference – one order can turn into a stream of orders.

A giant chip factory is not built with one check and done,

As the factory progresses – additional production stages open up, new systems are introduced, manufacturing and packaging capabilities expand, and later, additional systems are also required to increase capacity.

If Terafab truly transitions gradually from initial orders to increasingly larger orders – it could transform from a new customer into a significant order engine for years to come.

2027 will be the test year

Terafab aims to complete the pilot line by the end of 2027 and begin operations in 2028.

If this timeline proceeds according to plan, 2026-2027 could be the years when we see the true impact of the project on the supply chain.

The current orders are just the beginning of a project planned to eventually reach an unprecedented scale,

For chip equipment manufacturers – this means the potential for recurring orders as Terafab moves from the establishment phase to capacity expansion.

And the market knows well what happens when a customer with ambitious plans starts spending actual money...

So what should be monitored now?

The truly important data point will be the acceleration rate.

If during 2026 and 2027 we see a sequence of additional production orders – Terafab could gradually transform from another giant Musk project into a strategic customer for the chip equipment industry.

If Terafab truly starts running:

The Dutch chip company ASML, Applied Materials, and Lam Research will not need to chase Musk to sell him machines – he might already be queuing up for them.

And in the chip market – when machines start arriving before demand peaks – it's usually a sign that someone is building something much bigger than today's headline.
