Walmart is redesigning its strategy - from basic consumer goods to accessible home luxury?

Retail giant Walmart is making a significant strategic move and changing its image.

The company is expanding its product offerings in home decor and kitchen products, focusing on products with a higher price and quality level.

The goal here is clear

to move away from the traditional "lowest price" image only and enter more profitable categories.

The change stems from a combination of two main factors:

1. Slowdown in essential goods: The growth rate in sales of food and essential items has weakened.

2. Search for more profitability: Non-food products, such as furniture or advanced kitchen accessories, enjoy higher profit margins - meaning, for every shekel of sale, the company retains more money after deducting expenses.

The "affordable premium" strategy: Walmart is strengthening its home product lines with an emphasis on design and brands, including luxury pots, small appliances, and decorative furniture.

The company is not only targeting its regular customers - but is trying to appeal to the middle class, understanding that these consumers are looking for high quality - at a reasonable price.

This activity is being carried out simultaneously both in physical stores and on online platforms to increase the average transaction value - the total amount each customer spends per visit.

The economic analysis behind the move

Current consumption patterns show a complex picture:

The lower income segments are reducing expenses due to inflation (price increases) and high interest rates, which make loan and credit card repayments more expensive.

The middle class and above continues to spend selectively on improving quality of life and living conditions.

Walmart identifies this opportunity and aims to leverage the demand from the middle class to improve its financial structure.

The challenges and risks ahead

Despite the potential, the transition is not without risks:

For example, there is concern that Walmart's most recognized strategy - low prices - will weaken in the eyes of consumers.

In addition, Walmart is entering the arena for the first time against professional brands and chains specializing in home decor, which have enjoyed years of advantage in this market.

Also, managing the supply chain for furniture and electrical appliances is more complex and expensive than managing inventory of fast-moving consumer goods, which could burden operations.

In the stock market, this move is seen as a structural change for the medium and long term; it is not a quick fix for the upcoming quarterly results - but a rebuilding of the business model.

Walmart's ability to walk a fine line.

To maintain price competitiveness on one hand, and project luxury and quality on the other - this will be the decisive factor determining if the move is crowned a success.
