The facts?
Over the last decade, public power expenditures grew slower than data center construction expenditures - and this gap is only widening.
The volume of data center construction projects started this year could be double the level recorded in 2024.
Analysts expect a 98.7% surge (3-year CAGR) in data center construction starts, compared to only a 16% increase in power infrastructure
The growth in power infrastructure compared to the growth in demand is simply not enough to compete with this demand...
And then appeared - Caterpillar
Caterpillar's energy division is one of the companies offering a solution to the problem - its engines and turbines provide everything a data center needs:
Constant and continuous power supply.
Backup/emergency power supply – critical for system reliability.
For this reason, Bank of America maintained its 'Buy' rating for $CAT stock, according to its valuation, expecting and valuing a long-term solution.
The decisive finding from Virginia: To confirm its position, BofA analyzed air pollution permit data from Virginia, one of the world's largest data center hubs.
The result?
Caterpillar engines captured the largest share in permits for units of 1 megawatt and above.
Diesel-powered generators remained the preferred choice for operators, due to the simplicity and reliability they offer in emergency situations - compared to natural gas-powered generators.
Caterpillar's strategic preparation
Caterpillar understands the magnitude of the wave - and therefore the company reports that it is currently investing:
Doubling the production capacity of piston engines.
A 2.5-fold increase in turbine production capacity.
The stated goal?
To reach a total power generation capacity of 50 gigawatts by 2030 - with the understanding that diverse power requirements necessitate varied solutions.
And this is a huge lesson on how cross-referencing data between a massive infrastructure problem and a seemingly unrelated company...
But one division in the company - that offers the solution - changes the entire picture.
