The latest data paints an unequivocal picture:
The drone sector is entering a decade of meteoric growth!
Market size and potential: The global drone market is estimated at $73.06 billion in 2024, and is expected to double to $163.6 billion by 2030.
Meaning: an impressive annual growth rate of 14.3% (CAGR) between 2025–2030.
So what exactly is driving this boom? Breakthroughs in drone technology – lighter, faster, and smarter models. Increased battery efficiency enabling longer and more precise flights. AI-based autonomy – drones that learn to navigate, identify objects, and perform tasks independently. Advanced imaging sensors that allow for photography, measurement, and monitoring with unprecedented levels of accuracy.
Geographic distribution: North America leads the market – with a share of over 39% in 2024. Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region, thanks to massive investments in China, Japan, and India.
In the US alone, the market is expected to grow at a rate of 13% per year between 2025 and 2030.
Segmentation by sector: Hardware – accounts for more than 58% of revenue in 2024, thanks to demand for advanced motors, sensors, and controllers. Multi-Rotor drones – continue to dominate the product market, due to stability, flexibility, and ease of operation.
What happened last week?
1️⃣ On September 30, $DPRO announced a first order from the United States Army for FPV systems (miniature attack drones – just like those Ukraine uses).
This marked the US Army's first significant deal in the FPV sector.
2️⃣ On October 2, $ONDS announced it ordered 500 initial drones from its manufacturer to begin distribution to American defense contractors.
“This initial order of 500 units marks the beginning of an expandable program to supply affordable and operationally effective drone systems to American defense customers,” said Eric Brock, Chairman and CEO of Ondas Holdings.
3️⃣ On October 3, Citizens raised its price target for $AVAV to $400 per share.
The price target increase came after Citizens analysts attended AeroVironment's investor open house event on September 30 at the company's facility in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The event included presentations from senior management providing business updates and industry outlook, a facility tour, and a live-fire demonstration of a directed energy weapon system.
BTIG also raised its price target to 415 for the same reason.
4️⃣ On the same day, Needham raised its price target for $RCAT to $17 per share – when the stock price at the time of the rating was around $11.
The research firm noted that the Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) industry is entering what it describes as a “multi-year super-cycle,” with Red Cat positioned to meet the growing demand for small, security-grade ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) drones.
Needham identified the US Army's Short Range Reconnaissance Phase 2 (SRR2) program as Red Cat's most significant near-term opportunity, forecasting it could grow into an opportunity of over $200 million over the next two years.
The company noted that Red Cat's broader UAS portfolio and its expansion into unmanned watercraft position the company –
“at the center of a $15 billion US defense spending cycle on next-generation unmanned solutions.”
5️⃣ On the very same day, $UMAC announced it received an order worth $800,000 for drone components from $RCAT.
The order includes various components such as the Aura Analog camera, Aura VTX, Brave flight controller, Brave ESC, HDO+ goggles, and motors. These components will be integrated into Red Cat's FANG drones.
