The confidence gap between 'smart money' and 'dumb money' – what does it mean and why is it so important?
The logic behind the indicator:
The chart in the center of the image measures the gap between the confidence of experienced and professional investors ('smart money') and more emotional investors – the general public ('dumb money').
When this gap is very positive – meaning smart money is confident and the market is fearful – it's a classic hint of an impending bull market.
When the gap is very negative – meaning the public is enthusiastic but smart money is skeptical – it's a warning sign for declines.
What does the chart show us?
The blue line in the image is the confidence gap (Smart - Dumb).
The red dots mark extreme positive peaks – when the gap reaches its highest levels.
These are the moments when smart money is particularly optimistic, and historically – the market tends to surge
- And what happens in the market after these signals?
Here are the historical data in the table:
Two weeks after the signal – average return: +1.43%, success rate: 83%.
One month after – average return: +5.54%, success rate: 100% (!).
Two months after – +8.15% (!) success rate: 100%!
Meaning – when this gap jumps up extremely → a very high chance of a rally in the following weeks.
Here's the latest example: April 2025.
Signal date: April 7, 2025. Result one month later: +11.24% in the S&P 500 index!
This is one of the strongest signals recorded in this index since the early 2000s.
When the blue chart jumps sharply upwards – it's a sign that smart money sees value, and the public is still fearful.
This is usually when major rallies begin.
This tool does not say 'buy now', but rather shows when there is an extreme dissonance between professional and emotional behavior in the market – and a powerful hint about the direction of the next move.
