Novo Holdings reveals a 6.8% stake in a young and interesting startup
And the big question: why?
We set out to investigate $FDMT
Novo Holdings, one of the largest investors in biotechnology, (and yes, this is the holding company of the Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk), recently revealed a 6.8% stake in the shares of 4D Molecular Therapeutics (ticker: FDMT), approximately 3.17 million shares.
This is a significant vote of confidence in a company leading groundbreaking innovation in the field of gene therapy.
So what exactly does FDMT do?
The company developed a unique platform called “Therapeutic Vector Evolution”, a system that allows for the design of personalized genetic vectors.
A genetic vector is essentially a "carrier", a type of biological messenger whose role is to deliver a corrected gene into cells in the body, to treat a disease originating from a genetic defect.
What makes FDMT's platform special?
It is based on directed evolution technology, a method that earned its developer a Nobel Prize, allowing for the precise and controlled creation of new versions of proteins or viruses.
FDMT uses over a billion (!) synthetic capsid sequences, miniaturized viral envelopes, to select those that deliver the gene precisely to the desired tissue or organ, without harming other tissues.
Main treatment areas: Ophthalmology – treatments for retinal diseases such as macular degeneration (AMD) or diabetic macular edema, via intravitreal injection. For example, the drug 4D-150, which is in advanced development stages.
Cardiology – use of intravenous vectors for treating heart diseases by delivering genes directly into the bloodstream.
Pulmonology – treatments for severe lung diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis, via aerosol vectors, for example 4D-710.
The company's vision? To enable true healing through corrected genes.
Not just to alleviate symptoms.
If it succeeds in proving efficacy and safety on a large scale, this is a real medical revolution!
FDMT does not yet have significant revenue, and the company continues to record very significant losses each year, so why is Novo Nordisk still becoming a material partner in such a young company?
This is a step that signals deep trust from Novo in FDMT's technological platform, which connects advanced science, genetic engineering, and personalized medicine, and also, a step that if successful, could strengthen Novo's product portfolio in the global medical market.
What does Novo Holdings identify here that causes it to hold almost 7% of the company?
